All business owners are required to obtain licenses and permits without which their business may be considered illegal. Sometimes, special permits and licenses are required in accordance with the rules and regulations laid by the national government depending on your kind of business.

While some of the licenses are easy to obtain others may require a lot of homework. Let’s go through them one at a time.

Local Business Licenses: This is necessary for all businesses and will enable you, as a business owner, to legally operate a business under a city’s/country’s jurisdiction. To obtain this license you need to have your basic paperwork in order. Find out the kind of license you need to obtain and get the corresponding application. The application should be duly filled in and should be submitted to the respective government office along with the required fee. Local business licenses need to be updated or renewed as per relevant rules; so be sure to file for renewals.

State Business Licenses: Businesses offering products and services regulated by their state law need to file for these licenses. These licenses are required by people like realtors, hairdressers, lawyers, auto mechanics, private investigators etc. who require a certain amount of certified training or education. To obtain these licenses contact your local government offices to see if you need this license and then get the application. Fill it and file it with the respective state office along with the required fees. Renewals are necessary in this scenario too.

Sales Tax Licenses: This is required by almost all states for all retail businesses. It will allow you to charge sales tax from customers on their purchase. To obtain this license you will need to get in touch with your State Franchise Tax Board.

Federal Licenses: – Federal licensing is required for businesses, which are regulated by the government to a large extent. Businesses like these include inter-state trucking companies, meat-preparing companies, companies selling firearms etc. Legal help may well be required while you undergo the application process so consider consulting an attorney.

Permits: Permits are needed to keep a check on the community’s health through laws referred to as “ordinances”. That means that your business will need to comply with such ordinances in order to be legal.

The procedure to apply to these permits is the same as for Licenses. Some of these permits are mentioned below.

Sellers Permit: This will be required in case you will be purchasing wholesale merchandise for resale. The State Franchise Tax Board usually issues this permit.

Building Permit: This permit is required if you’re planning to build a commercial space. You business will strictly need to be in compliance with local laws otherwise you may have trouble getting other important permits.

Health Permit: -If your business includes any kind of food preparation, you will need a health permit. You will need to call the governing health department for an inspection in order to get this permit.

There are other permits like the Home Occupation Permit that you will need to obtain if your business is home based.

Finally, if you are unwilling to comply with an ordinance you can always apply for a “variance” which will allow you to violate or circumnavigate the former.

There is an old saying that says, ‘The fortune is in the follow-up.” It’s become an old saying for good a reason: it’s true. Following up with customers and clients can be one of the most important business actions a business owner can take.

There is an old saying that says, ‘The fortune is in the follow-up.” It’s become an old saying for good a reason: it’s true. Following up with customers and clients can be one of the most important business actions a business owner can take.

There are many ways to follow up, all of them being important in their own unique ways. One of these is to follow up with potential and past customers. This can be done very easily through sending out a regular customer newsletter.

To send out a customer newsletter, or do any form of email marketing for that matter, it is recommended to have an autoresponder service. This will make sending the newsletters very easy. They can even be loaded into the system several months or even years in advance.

It is no secret that people lead busy lives and they cannot always remember to do all the things they want or need to do. Simply sending out a little email, reminding them that your business is still there may be all it takes to stimulate a sale.

Following up with customers can also make them feel special and appreciated. Offering them a special customer appreciation sale is one way to do this. This can, again, be done through email marketing. Another twist is to send your customer an actual card in the postal mail.

As you can imagine from your own buying habits, when you feel appreciated by a business, you are more likely to buy more product from that business. When you feel ignored or unappreciated, you are more likely to avoid that business.

One reason that some business owners fall behind on following up with their customers is due to a lack of time. If this sounds familiar, setting up some systems to keep things flowing can make life easier.

This could include buying pre-written newsletters and hiring a virtual assistant to personalize them before loading them into an autoresponder, or having a ghostwriter create custom-made newsletters.

If you have a service-based business, it is also very important to follow up with potential clients on quotes and proposals you’ve submitted. When a person contacts you for potential work, they may be at a starting point where they are just trying to sort out their project.

Following up will let them know you are interested in working with them and remind them that they need to hurry up and hire you before someone else does.

That doesn’t mean you have to be pushy at all. Just sending a quick note to let them know that you currently have space on your calendar for them, but also reminding them that your spaces fill up fast, is all that is needed.

Once a business owner implements a regular follow-up routine into their business, they will open up the potential for repeat business and more profits.

Market assessment is one of the primary prerequisites for business planning. It is necessary for knowing and understanding the needs, wants and beliefs of people who are going to buy or invest in your product. Market assessment will tell a businessman how to exactly determine the ebb and flow of the market in order to market the product with significant success.

Most of the times, you will already know that a market exists for your product. The problem is in knowing how big that market is and if it is big enough to support your business. If a product that is launched has little or no market, you will be out of business.

Market research is crucial in gaining a good understanding about your potential customers and competitors and the risks involved. Let’s look at what market research essentially involves

Customer Analysis

This is necessary for understanding the buying habits and lifestyle preferences of customers. Customer analysis can be based on data obtained through credit card purchases, magazine subscriptions, card memberships, surveys and voter registration of potential customers. This method, which is also called “data mining”, will help you make confident business decisions.

Choice Modeling

It is a general-purpose tool, which involves detailed methodologies like Orthogonality and Experimental Design used for making predictions about the decision-making behavior of customers. It is one of the most suitable methods for predicting a consumers’ willingness to pay for a service, a product or an upgrade.

Competitor analysis

So what if you are trying to sell a conventional product and others in the market are offering similar products too. Competitor analysis is needed to assess the strengths and weaknesses of your potential competitors. It can be done by first constructing a competitor’s array, which will clearly enable you to define the nature of your industry, your competitors, your customers the benefits expected and your key success factors.

Typically a competitor profiling will include research on the competitor’s background, finances, products, marketing, facilities, personnel and its corporate and marketing strategies. Media scanning is a great way of understanding the beliefs of your competitor and the kind of market they are trying to target. This is done through a thorough scanning of your competitor’s ads to find out about the new product offerings, branding strategy, positioning strategy etc.

Costing

This is an important factor and should be taken into due consideration. After all this research the last thing you can do wrong is to price your product inappropriately. Pricing should be accurate as a product that is of good quality and cheap may lure more customers while you incur losses and a highly priced product may drive them away putting you out of business.

Besides all this research, a Risk Analysis can be undertaken which is a process to assess the circumstances that may come in the way of the success of your business.

Most businessmen undertake a peripheral analysis and then sit back and wonder what went wrong. A detailed assessment of the market is essential and should not be taken lightly. It’s worth the money you will invest in your business.

If you are feeling frustrated because your business isn't seeing the kind of success you though it would by now, it may help to re-analyze your reasons for starting your business in the first place.

If you are feeling frustrated because your business isn’t seeing the kind of success you though it would by now, it may help to re-analyze your reasons for starting your business in the first place.

Part of being ready to start a new business or continue a fledgling on line business is to have a plan. But if you just jumped in after reading a few guides about “Making Money On line” and went running around from one project or sub-project to another, never seeming to get any of them completely done, you have to ask yourself NOW; will I ever do any better? Do you think you may do or be doing better by now if you had a plan.

You may have read hundreds of reports and purchased a hundred more internet marketing associated ebooks, applied some of the strategies defined, advertised your business in Adwords and produced several blogs for search engine sake, but so far there has been little or no profit, right? You have to be thinking, “I must be doing something wrong”, so you continue to hunting for the next big time, never before seen guru promise of millions overnight.

Well, to be honest, you are doing something wrong! But it’s not something you can attribute to lack of information or even bad information, it’s due to a missing link – your reasons for owning your own on line business with the benefits of those reasons inspiring you to construct a proper, well defined and goal oriented strategy.

1. Are you in the habit of creating a plan to accomplish your goals?

2. Do you think you have the self discipline to stick to a plan? If not do you think you would be willing to learn do discipline yourself to learn how to stick to your plan?

3. Can You Sacrifice Certain Wants and Needs to Succeed?

4. Are you willing to give up the time necessary from things you currently do in your life to succeed in your on line business?

This may mean giving up:

Some of your favorite T.V. shows

Foregoing some of your favorite hobbies

Foregoing other favorite activities – sports, charity work, etc.

If you answered no to any of the above questions, you need to step back and take a serious look at your reason(s) for wanting to own and run your own on line business. (Or any type of business for that matter.)

If you have not sat down and written out not just your reasons for running your own business, but the benefits of ending up with a SUCCESSFUL on line business then you have 2 choices.

1. Go outside. Find a wall. Brick would be nice but any hard surfaced wall will do just fine. Stand about 2 feet from the wall. Reach forward with both hands and lean into the wall. Now lean in closed enough so you can pound your head against that wall until you realize this exorcize is exactly what you are already doing by not knowing the reasons why you want to own and run your own on line business.

2. WRITE DOWN YOUR REASONS including the benefits of what each reason will bring you once you HAVE made your business a success. (I’m not providing a guide here. This is all on you. Take the Responsibility. Put as much time and effort into this exorcize as you need to. Let your imagination run a little wild. Be realistic but remember you are capable of doing far more than you think you can. So don’t hold back.)

So you’re back? How did you do? You should have a clearer picture now as to how to proceed to get your business headed back in the direction you want it to go and therefore less frustrated and re-energized about your business. Remember; professionals go these kinds of excorsises on a regular basis whether they are frustrated with the way business is going or not. Are you a professional?

If you are an internet marketer, then you more than likely have seen the trend in fellow marketers going “Offline” promoting their internet marketing services to offline, local businesses. Recently it has been come a HOT topic of discussion and everyone seems to be going “Offline!” The reason why many internet marketers are deciding to get involved with offline consulting is because it pays A LOT better than performing some of the same services for people online.

While as an online freelancer, you might be able to get a few dollars for writing an article and you might also be able to fetch a few hundred dollars for web design services; by taking your skills offline, you can get double, triple or even more from local, offline business owners. After hearing about the benefits of article marketing, business owners are very often willing to pay $25 per article or more.

Web design and SEO (Search Engine Optimization) services can also fetch THOUSANDS of dollars from offline “brick and mortar” businesses! I have landed $15,000 deals with offline businesses to take control of their internet marketing campaign, fix their website up and do some BASIC, on-site optimization (SEO). These are all services that I perform daily on my OWN websites for FREE! Most internet marketers are used to this type of work and many can do it with their eyes closed.

However, if performing these tasks/services are not your strong point — They can always be outsourced to “online freelancers” who generally do the same work for a lot less money (this might be YOU). Then you can up-charge the offline business and make yourself a nice profit without doing much work at all.

Now, hopefully you can see how taking your internet marketing skills OFFLINE can make you a LOT of money this year… And for many years to come.

Moving towards a retail business is one of the most profitable ventures that an entrepreneur can take considering that it is one of the fastest growing sector in any economy.

Moving towards a retail business is one of the most profitable ventures that an entrepreneur can take considering that it is one of the fastest growing sector in any economy. At least one third of most ventures undertaken come under this category and it allows a good and honest living through providing people with a wide variety of goods and services.

Retailing is mostly undertaken through trading mechanical parts, electronics, clothing and accessories, appliances and home utility goods and it also includes services like advice and skilled labor mostly in the life-improvement sector.

Basic Retailing can come under the following categories:

1. Store-Retailing: This includes most independent shops which range from departmental or convenience stores to conventional supermarkets and many large-scale enterprises.

2. Specialty Retailing: It is achieved through understanding the demand of the market and supplying directly to the needs of the customer.

3. Non-Store Retailing: This involves the sales of goods and products which can vary from electronics, automobile parts to many other goods

4. Mail Order: Sending goods like novelty items, books, catalogs and a lot of other products directly through mail.

5. Internet Retailing: It essentially involves allowing people to shop online for a selective range of goods and products which can be easily accessed and ordered.

In case you wish to start up your business in the retail sector then it would be prudent for you to go through the key points mentioned below:

1. To begin with you need to survey the markets and take up appropriate research to identify a viable goods or products which have a significant demand. Do not be afraid to mix it up with your interests as long as you consider it practical. For instance, if you live in a coastal city and you have an active passion for surfing, there is always the need of a good surf shop which has good boards at reasonable prices. Not only will your interest and knowledge be appreciated but the venture can quickly turn profitable too.

2. Estimate a particular amount you will need as capital for the investment which ideally should be a good feasible number that goes well with your needs while keeping tune to the market. Always check and double check your options regarding your investment especially with the outlets you get your goods from, loan options and rates and your shop set-up. Insurance is also important and ought to be considered as part of the investment as you never know what might happen and you will always need to recover from any damages faced by the shop or goods, or even losses.

3. Location is the key to any successful retail business and a catchy business address is always good, as not only does it bring in customers, but creates a branding effect as well. People always remember a good shop which easy to reach and easy to remember. Use as much space as necessary but do not take up too much at once and choose a location which is close to a place that attracts a lot of attention.

4. Always maintain a good range of the products you have to offer. Customers don’t like to be kept to just a single option, so feel free to keep a wide range which differs in quality and prices. People love it when they find a product which fits their needs within a fixed budget.

Finding adequate sums of money for starting a business is the biggest hurdle you may face, unless you have deep pockets or some or the other kind of inherited wealth.

Finding adequate sums of money for starting a business is the biggest hurdle you may face, unless you have deep pockets or some or the other kind of inherited wealth. It is impossible to start a new business without some startup capital because most businesses do not start making money immediately and there is no guarantee that the business will rake in enough money in its initial period, for you to live on.

Here are a few tips that will help you in getting you dream startup capital.

A Good Business Plan – You can raise money only if you know what you are going to do, what you are going to sell and the reason you are going to succeed in doing it. As a new businessman you need to write a business plan and define how you re going to use the funding if it’s made available to you.

Defining Your Options – You will need to make a list of all kinds of sources of funding that you can tap and they may include banks, credit cards, customers, government funding and even friends and family. Using family money is a good approach but your relatives and friend should be clear about the risks involved and should be willing to incur substantial losses if the circumstances arise.

The Right Investors – Try not to waste time with investors who just won’t invest in a business like yours. You need to find the right investors. You will find it difficult to find people who live several thousand miles away and would like to invest in your business and thus it makes sense to tap local investors. If you can’t find any, then you will need to move to a place where there are investors. Believe in your dream and you will succeed.

Progress And Feedback – There will be a lot of times when investors won’t readily invest in your project but will ask you to stay in touch and inform them about your progress. Do not consider it a “let down” and get back with them in a few months time if you have made progress or found a few big customers.

Feedbacks given by your investors on your business ideas need to be taken seriously. Be a smart entrepreneur and adapt quickly. It is advisable to have one partner who concentrates on fund raising while the other on improving the business.

Using Credit Cards – If you have good credit, using your credit card is the easiest way of getting at least a part of the capital needed for raising money. You can purchase equipment and other stuff on your credit card but be careful that you don’t run a huge credit card bill.

Besides these methods, you can start the business as a part time occupation in case you need to meet stringent financial obligations. It’s not advisable to quit your job unless your business is giving you a good flow of customers and profits.

You can also try to apply for business loans but remember that they are hard to get and the banks may turn you down because of their fear of lending money to startups.

Last but not the least, when you have become a successful business person, just remember the times when you needed a break! Once you’ve earned your millions, lend some money to a new entrepreneur, too.

Running a business is one of the most lucrative career options out there, as not only does it pay well and make for an excellent source of income, but it is equally challenging and fulfilling activity. For running a business, you do not necessarily need to be highly skilled or create an innovative product that everybody would need; rather you should focus on developing a good idea and plan its feasible implementation. All you need to do is take a step forward and you just might find the perfect path which will help you get all that you desire. Here are a few ideas to help you get started.

Many people spend a lot of time just to get that one brainwave which will make their dreams come true. Others take a look around and brainstorm. One of the best possible ways to take the leap is to consider your capabilities, experience and your interests. For example, if you are good at cooking or if you are a chef you can start you own restaurant business. If you are interested in music, you can always open a music store or even a record store or perhaps even look to open a recording company.

Types of Business

Services: The service industry is a good and profitable sector which depends on the skilled and utility service provided by one or more individuals. A startup company in the service sector is relatively easy to form as it does not require a lot of capital and yet offers the promise of high earnings. It normally starts from a single individual to a group working under a single banner. The service industry includes delivery services, plumbing service, auto-mechanical services, carpentry, courier services, consultants and many more.

Products Industry: Such ventures are based on the production, manufacturing and selling of a particular quality product or equipment. Products range from common household items such as scissors, knives, utensils, furnishings to highly advanced electronic equipments and mechanical parts. The product industry is moderately difficult to run and manage as it requires a lot of time, capital, investment, resources and manpower.

Retail: This is a venture which involves trading of goods of a particular brand to consumers for a small profit with each sale. This can be done through shops, stores, vending machines, mail-order and even over the internet through e-commerce websites. Goods such as branded electronics, automobiles, household goods and various other goods come under this category.A retail venture is relatively simple to start with and often requires a moderate investment and can generate significant profits in a short span of time.

Once you have decided which form of business you plan to get into, you need to draw up a proper business plan and see how much you can invest to start with. Next you need to develop a cohesive strategy for making your business idea a success. With a little bit of research, foresight and hard work, you can definitely aim to achieve success in your proposed business venture.
